First graders explored properties of different earth materials while we were on our search for the perfect mortar for a rock wall. This curriculum comes from Engineering is Elementary and offers a lot of hands-on experiences for students to explore as they learn. After we determined which materials were the best to keep two tiles together, we got to work on our walls. Some students used just one material for their mortar and others found that a combination worked best. Once their walls were built and dried, we tested against earthquake and wrecking ball. Some walls stayed up and others came crashing down. The students were so encouraging of each other during this time. It was nice to see empathy in action!
