5th grade Engineering Challenge #2 - The Great Egg Drop

Fifth graders worked hard planning, designing, and testing their egg drop contraptions.  For this project as usual, we used the engineering design process.  There was a lot of discussion of drag and insulation while they planned.  They used skills that they had learned from as far back as third grade!  Some groups used parachutes, some extra padding, some a little of both.  Several groups tested theirs without an egg and decided that things needed to be changed.  They made adjustments until they got it just the way they wanted it.  Then came the big test day!  I was proud of the way the students cheered each other on while they watched each drop.  Their kindness and supportive attitudes are very fun to watch.

Here are some photos of the building process:

Not a crack!  It worked!

And down they go!

Very exciting to see if it will work
