Straw Towers, Structure, and 4th & 5th grade Little Longhorns

This engineering challenge required quite a bit of teamwork to pull off.  The students were put into teams, given 25 straws and some tape, and told to make the highest tower they could that would hold a heavy marble on top.  Those teams that were able to work together well, built very strong, tall towers.  It was impressive to watch them discover what shapes work best to remain strong.  There was conflict, compromise, and a final decision made.  While this process was quite challenging to some of our Little Longhorns, in the end they learned a lot about working together.  It makes me further believe that this type of project is exactly what all kids need.  I know as an adult I could use a refresher on solving problems as a group as well!  :)

In the end, there was pride in work well done and new friendships made along the way.  Here are some pictures of the process.
