Boats, Buoyancy, and Second Grade

Second grade learned about buoyancy and were challenged with making boats out of tin foil and straws.  Their goal was to build a boat that could float and hold 10 Lego mini figures.  Sometimes the boat didn't float the first time they tested and they had to go back as a team to figure out what went wrong.  We discussed F.A.I.L. (First Attempt In Learning) and how important it is to try something harder than what you think you can do.  Success is only really celebrated when it is earned by doing something challenging.  It's the effort that is more important than the final product.  I'm super proud of these second graders for taking on this challenge!  Here are some photos of the process.
